A man, believed to be 53 years old and from Leicestershire, was cut out of his car and flown to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth last Friday. He suffered severe head injuries but is now believed to be in a stable condition. No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the accident.

The incident happened as the man drove his blue Peugeot 206 along busy St Ives Road where there has been a history of speeding.

Local residents are now reiterating their fears for the speeding dangers on the road in an attempt to prevent further car accidents. It is reported that the recent accident follows a similar incident where another car also ended up on its side.

Residents also say that the accident is third in recent weeks and has left people asking questions about the Highways Authority and how well it is managing the local roads.

Many Drivers Are Breaking The Speed Limit In The Area

The circumstances surrounding the recent accident have not been formally identified and it is not certain if speed contributed to the reasons for it.

One local resident said that there was a recorded speed check earlier on in the year that showed most people travelling on that part of the road had been over the speed limit. He says that the accident with the blue Peugeot last Friday has made many locals ask questions.

He said: “I understand that over an eight-day period 31,000 vehicle speeds were checked and up to 25,000 of these were measured breaking the 30mph speed limit.” He added that some speeds were recorded as almost 60 mph but that the highways authority is ignoring this problem.

Speed Reducing Measures To Prevent Vehicle Accidents

Local community members say it has already asked Cornwall council for more to be done about speeding on the road e.g. installing flashing red lights or speed limit signs but nothing has been done.

A Cornwall Council spokesperson said that the accident did not demonstrate any problems with highway issues according to the most up to date reports on it. He said: “However, as with any incident on our roads we will investigate the circumstances and act accordingly. A road survey in March this year showed the average speeds on the road were around 32mph.”
