‘Morning After’ Road Safety Campaign

A Gloucestershire Road Safety group has started an country-wide initiative to encourage drivers not to get behind the wheel the morning after drinking.

The campaign, which is being promoted across the whole county, started at the beginning of this month with the hope of raising awareness about how alcohol stays within the body long after it has been originally consumed. It acknowledges that most drivers do the right thing when it comes to drinking and driving, by leaving their vehicles at home but it says that more education
about driving the following day is required. The campaign will be helped with posters and messages on fuel pumps throughout the county as well as a radio promotion.

Speaking for the Gloucestershire Road Safety Partnership, Garry Handley, road safety manager, said that drinking the morning after still remains a ‘serious road safety problem’ despite the number of people drinking and driving reducing. He said: “Around 1,000 local drivers are arrested and convicted every year and they have to live with the personal and social consequences of their actions.”

How Long Does It Take For Alcohol To leave The System?

The Department of Transport says that it takes an hour to break down one unit of alcohol. It is estimated that if you consume three large glasses of wine and stop drinking then you should not drive until 1 pm the next day when thirteen hours have passed. Local Gloucestershire Councillor, Will Windsor-Clive said that the majority of people do the right thing when it comes to drinking and driving but many do not realise the amount of alcohol that has stayed in the system the day after.

Have You Been Involved In A Road Accident?
