Road Injury Statistics

RoSPA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) reports that road safety in the UK has one of the best standards in the world and that the number of people killed on the roads today, due to traffic accidents, has fallen even though there has been a marked increase in traffic.

Despite the good news there are still people who die on Britain’s roads everyday in preventable road traffic accidents. 2012 figures from RoSPA reveal the following number of public road accidents which were reported to the police:

  • 1,754 people killed
  • Seriously injured was 23,039 seriously injured
  • 170,930 slightly injured

Almost all fatal road accidents are reported to the police but many accidents involving injuries, even serious injuries, go unreported. As such, it is difficult to put an exact figure on the total number of road accidents but RoSPA estimates that there could be around 660,000 to 880,000 road accidents per year in the UK.

What Are The Common Causes of Road Accidents?

Statistically, the common causes of road accidents are mainly down to speeding, with approximately 400 people being killed on the roads per year because of accidents involving high speed collisions.

Drink driving figures account for 280 deaths every year and a lack of seat belt wearing costs 200 lives annually. 300 deaths are put down to careless driving, a term which relates to drivers being aggressive behind the wheel, distracted or someone who is in a rush and causes an accident.

Road accidents while at work account for one third of fatal road accidents and a lack of driving experience is responsible for 400 roads deaths.
