As the ride out season is now well underway, some of the most attractive motorcycle routes in Scotland have been targeted in a campaign to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents in the area.
The campaign, named ‘Around the Corner’ has seen police officers from Strathearn out in full force in the motorbike accident black spot areas. They have been out in both marked and unmarked vehicles alongside mobile surveillance units from Tayside Safety Camera Partnership.
At the heart of the programme is a series of maps highlighting the favourite motorcycle routes chosen by riders. These routes are the ones with the highest incidence of motorcycle accidents. The maps identify fuel stops, food stop offs, information about the whereabouts of safety cameras as well as giving prominence to danger areas.
Road Policing Inspector of Perth and Kinross, Grant Edwards, said that the areas on the maps were some of the most popular sites for motorcycle enthusiasts. He said that there was a parallel between the popularity of the areas in ride out season and the high number of ‘personal injury collisions’.
He added: “The number of riders and passengers that are killed or seriously injured is an area of casualty reduction that is of extreme concern.”
He said that he is also hopeful that the involvement of the police is seen as a ‘positive measure’ in an attempt to decrease the number of motorcycle accidents.
If motorcyclists would like more information about the maps, they are available at www.safetytayside.co.uk.
