A lorry and a school bus have been involved in a road traffic accident in South Cumbria.
Emergency crews including 5 ambulances were sent to the accident scene on the A685 in Grayrigg near Kendal early on Monday morning.
Injuries After Collision
Around 20 people are thought to have been injured and no children have been seriously harmed.
The 44 year old lorry driver had to be cut from his vehicle by fire crew and it is thought he has spinal injuries. Ten people were taken to nearby by hospitals and one person was airlifted to Royal Preston with head, arm and neck injuries and another adult has head injuries.
The six children who had minor injuries were taken to Royal Lancaster Hospital.
Aftermath Of The Accident
Images have emerged showing the extent of the damage to the vehicles with the front of lorry badly damaged. Investigations into how the accident happened. The bus driver, 47, has since been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust said it was too early to confirm the number of casualties but they suspect it is around 20. The Spokesperson said: “We are currently assessing the scene and working closely with other members of the emergency services, with our priority being to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”
Another spokesman added that the accident could have been a lot worse. He said: “Obviously when you’ve got vehicles with multiple passengers there’s always the potential for serious injuries, maybe even death.”
