A woman has admitted responsibility for a car accident which left two primary school children seriously injured.
The road traffic accident happened in September last year when the 79 year old woman’s car careered onto the other side of the road and hit another vehicle with the two children inside.
The children, (a boy and a girl), were on their way to a swimming lesson with their dad when the car collided into them.
The accident resulted in a huge rescue operation with air ambulances, 3 helicopters and all emergency services present.
The children were taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where they both spent a significant period recovering from their injuries.
The young girl, who was 8 at the time of the accident, had a fractured skull and broken wrist and both youngsters suffered from short term memory loss.
The young boy, 11, was in hospital for nearly 3 months spending time in intensive care and neuro-rehabilitation. He had to have sections of his skull removed so that pressure put on his brain during the accident could be relieved; both children are lucky to be alive according to medics.
Woman Made Guilty Plea At Court
The woman, from Sunderland, this week made her guilty plea at Durham Crown Court in respect of the car accident. The children’s mother said that it was disappointing that the defendant had taken so long to admit responsibility.
She said: “When the accident happened it was just a nightmare. It’s impossible to describe how you feel in that situation where your two young children are just laying helpless in intensive care.
Car Accidents Have Massive Consequences, Says Mother
The children’s mother also made the point that car accidents have huge consequences and what happened should serve as a warning to all drivers. She said: “I hope all drivers take note of our situation and realise that there are massive consequences of car accidents.”
Both children are doing well in recovery and both are now back at school.
