An awareness campaign that focuses on the driving behaviour of parents is hoping to ‘futureproof’ the safety of future generations.
The campaign, entitled: ‘Kids in the Car Campaign’ has been launched off the back research that discovered children mimic their parents in all kinds of ways, including the way in which they drive a car. According to the research conducted by TRL, children naturally copy what their parents do in all walks of life and driving is no different.
Parents Admit To Speeding And Going Through Lights
During the study, a third of drivers admitted to speeding while driving by over 10 mph and also said that they accelerated through amber lights on some occasions, as well as shouting at other road users and almost twenty percent said they drove knowing they were tired. One of the researchers on the project, Neale Kinnear said: “Children not only soak up what is going on in their world but also try to make sense of it to develop their own behaviour. What they learn as a child will inform their future behaviour and social interactions.” He said that parents have the ability to shape a new generation of drivers’ and attitudes to driving behaviour by setting a good example with their own.
The initiative has been endorsed by the Scottish Government, Transport Minister, Keith Brown who said that the campaign was important in ‘helping parents and carers keep their children safe’ he added: “but it is also critical to their future safety when they get behind the wheel, given what we now know about children’s crash risk mirroring their parents’ crash risk.”
