An elderly woman has lost her leg and suffered multiple injuries after a high-street crash in Cornwall.
The 78 year old was leaving a shop in Camborne when she was suddenly faced with a vehicle reversing at speed towards her.
The car drove into her, pushing her through the front window of a shop. The pensioner was taken to Royal Cornwall Hospital where her left leg was amputated and where she remained in a coma for 12 days. She had also suffered serious injuries to her pelvis and will need further rehabilitation.
She now undergoes 2 hours of physiotherapy a day and hopes to have a prosthetic leg fitted and an electric wheelchair. She says the accident has devastated her.
She said: “I never expected this would happen to me. My sons have been so protective and the hospital staff have been so caring. I am doing lots of exercises but it is tiring,”.
Man Admits To Careless Driving
The 76 year old man, who was driving the car, admitted to careless driving and was banned for three years and ordered to retake his test.
His legal team said that he had been suffering from sleepless nights since the accident and that he was extremely upset about it. He told Truro Magistrates Court that it was unlikely he would drive again.
The injured femaile pensioner said: “He (the driver) should have gone to prison. I have got to live with this for the rest of my life. It’s so hard, I want my leg back.”
