A new report published in the Belfast Telegraph online reveals new road traffic accident statistics which highlight a rise in young people suffering from accidents on the road.

According to the figures, which were published by the Department of Transport, double the amount of young adults (20 – 24 year olds) said they had suffered an injury in a road accident during 2010 – 2012 compared to the overall age group average.

The over 60s came off best with only 1.8 % injured in a road crash during the last three years. This bracket was followed closely by 50 – 59 year olds of which 3% said they had had a road traffic accident injury from 2010 -2012.

Whiplash Injuries

Also from the travel survey, which involved 17,000 people, it was revealed that over half of slight road traffic injuries can be attributed to whiplash, with bruises and cuts also factoring in the results.

Serious car accident injuries were mainly fractures and broken bones and shock also ranked in the research outcomes.

Fatal Road Accidents

The results also indicated that out of all the fatal road accidents, nearly 60% of these happened on rural roads with only 5% occurring on motorways.
