A heroic biker from Derby who suffered a devastating injury and almost never walked again will donate his 100th pint of blood next month.

In 1978 Mark Jenkins, a former bomb explosive expert in the RAF had a collision with a tractor while on his bike. As well as suffering broken bones and the possibility of a leg amputation, the accident also left Mark with the urgent need for 9 pints of blood to save his life.

Fortunately Mark’s leg was saved and he now has steel plates fitted into it. Despite being told he was unlikely to walk again, strong-willed Mark proved them wrong and began taking steps after a long stint in hospital.

This tenacity has continued in Mark’s determination to donate blood on a regular basis. He gave blood abroad when returning to work in the Falklands in 1995 and has continued since then. He now also donates platelets which help cancer patients as well as those requiring bone marrow transplants.

Mark said: “My accident was just a typical one with a motorbike – it involved a tractor and I lost. He added that he was very grateful for the blood being available to save his life and said that as soon as he was able to give blood himself, 18 months later, he did. He now believes that the painless process of giving blood should be done by all who can.
