In October 2008, the 32 year old was in London on her motorbike, travelling at around 10 mph. She was filtering in and out of traffic when suddenly she was hit by a car as it was reversing onto the pavement. She was flung on to the road and left with a broken leg and a strain on her right shoulder.

Her Condition Worsened Following Her Initial Diagnosis

To begin with, the woman’s injuries were classed as ‘minor’ however, since the accident she has experienced diminished sensation in her legs, caused by a condition which health professionals feared could leave her completely paralysed.

After symptoms of tingling and numbness in her leg began, she was diagnosed with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) which is a chronic illness characterised by the spreading of symptoms throughout the body of a period of time. Shortly after confirmation of the condition, she began to feel the tingling spread to her thighs and buttocks.

Frightening Illness That Threatened To Cause Complete Paralysis

At one point medical professionals feared that she would lose sensation in the whole of her body, however, there are now positive signs that the spreading has been curtailed, although she remains having no voluntary movement in her lower body. The woman says that following her injuries it is so hard to even simply get out of the house.

Life Before The Motorbike Accident

Before her accident happened, when she was 27 years old, the woman wanted to be a physiotherapist either working for the NHS or the British Army.

She said: “I used to train 23 hours a week with the Territorial Army, would take part in triathlons, loved running, swimming, mountaineering that was my life,” she continued: “I was up at 6.30am every morning until 10.30pm every night and never stopped. To go from that life to lying down, staring at the ceiling for hours and hours is a massive shock.”

She added: “It’s terrifying to see this illness slowly moving, spreading up your body, and even worse not knowing when or if it will stop.”

Her father now cares for her along with her mother who is blind and the woman says she has amazing support from her family.
