At-Work Road Users Are Cause for Concern Say Experts

A strategic road safety report has emphasised the need for greater awareness and need for measures when it comes to road accidents involving ‘at-work’ drivers.

RoSPA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) undertook the research along with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and the University College London to see how well occupational road risk was managed by employers. Experts in the field believe that the same amount of attention and focus applied to other work place injuries should also be applied to this area of road safety.

The plan includes action on better recording of accidents by the police and the HSE, analysing the management of occupational road risk (MORR) and seeing how effective it is. It states that more research into car data records and different kinds of technology that are able to monitor and measure bringing back schemes should be supported.

Road Accident Stats

Close to five thousand people have been fatally injured in a collision on the road that has involved an at-work driver and around 40,000 have been seriously injured. It can often be the case that the person who has been seriously injured or killed was not the at-work driver and more than four times as many non at-work drivers were killed in collisions as opposed to at-work drivers.

RoSPA says that the area is a priority for the organisation. Kevin Clinton, its head of road safety said: “As the latest figures show, up to a third of road accidents involve someone who is using the road for work purposes. He added that RoSPA will be providing more guidance for employers for occupational road risk action.

Have You Been Injured In A Road Accident?

If you have experienced a road accident and suffered an injury as a result then you could be eligible to make a personal injury claim. In all cases, third party blame needs to be clearly established and there are strict time limits that also apply.
