The 27 year old man sustained multiple injuries when he was hit by the van that pulled out after failing to spot him, causing him to hurtle through the air in June last year.

Accident Injuries

The biker suffered a severe head injury; 4 broken ribs; a broken pelvis and thigh bone and injuries to his wrist and knee cap. He was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary and later had an operation to reduce the pressure on his brain. In total, he underwent 11 operations and was brought out of his coma after 10 days.

The man’s mother said that the medics had told her to prepare for the worst as the accident had been so serious. She said: “We were just sat there not knowing anything. It was just awful. Paul, my husband, didn’t take it well at all.” She added that she would not want another parent to go through the same thing.

Road To Rehabilitation

Her son can now walk again for short distances but is in pain with his hip. He has returned to work but will not play football or the guitar again and says he will have to watch matches instead. He commented that he often thinks about what his life would be like now had he chosen a different route on his bike that day but that the accident has not deterred him from going out on his bike again.

Following the incident, the van driver was fined and banned from driving for 48 days. The family is now trying to encourage drivers to always look out for motorcyclists when on the roads.
