Controversial Road Improvement Plans In Cambridge

A group of cycling safety campaigners has raised concerns about a new road improvement scheme at an accident black spot in Cambridge.

The new scheme which is managed by the local council is set to cost around £410,000 and will address road safety issues at the Radegund Road, Perne Road and Birdwood Road junction and roundabout.

However, Cambridge Cycling Safety Group, does not feel that the new proposals will do enough to stop road traffic accidents involving cyclists and has told the council’s environmental committee that the road improvements do not go far enough.

Reducing Speeds Is Main Aim

The aim behind the plan which has received support from the majority of local residents, is to reduce the speeds of vehicles by narrowing the lanes and introducing crossing points and approach points on the roundabout. There will also be a path around the roundabout for pedestrians and cyclists.

Martin Lucas-Smith, chairman of the cycling group, said that the shared-use paths were an issue and that more cash was needed to spend on the scheme.

Mr Lucas-Smith said: “We are very keen to see this roundabout dealt with because it is really unpleasant to cycle through and it’s incredibly poor for walking, but we feel the current scheme is compromised. We feel it’s a scheme being made to fit the budget rather than to come up with a solution.”
