With five road deaths in 10 days, reports also reveal that the same number of accidents occurring in January 2014 so far, are equal to the number of accidents that happened in the whole month of January 2013.

The situation has been named a ‘road safety emergency’ with one police officer reporting that there had been ‘someone dying on our roads every 48 hours’ at the beginning of the year.

New year Road Safety Resolution – Already Broken

Two separate fatal road accidents occurred in one day last week with a 58 year old man involved in a car collision and another young man of 22 dying in a van collision.

Supt David Moore added that a New Year resolution to improve road safety was ‘broken already’ but added that the focus would now be to ‘re-double’ efforts. He said: “This road safety emergency is the responsibility of everybody who enters a road way, whether on four wheels, on two wheels or on foot.”

In Armargh, Archbishop Eamon Martin said that everyone has a responsibility to pay attention on the roads and that if all road users put in a joint effort to be more sensible on the roads then it could prevent a lot of anguish for families faced with losing a loved one.
